Padmini Das and Pravin Punamiya, first year
students in the new PhD program in Environmental Management working
under the supervision of Dr. Dibs Sarkar, Professor of Earth and
Environmental Studies, received the Geological Society of America (GSA)
Graduate Student Research Grants in April 2009. Padmini received $2310
for her proposal entitled "Development of a chemically-catalyzed
phytoremediation system for 2, 4, 6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) contaminated
soils"; Pravin
received $2390 for his proposal "Biogeochemical fate of
a veterinary antibiotic in soil-water systems." The primary role of the
GSA research grants program is to provide partial support for thesis or
dissertation research in Earth and Environmental Sciences for graduate
students enrolled at universities in the United States, Canada, Mexico
and Central America. This year, only about a quarter of the 600 plus
applications were successful in receiving funding. Padmini and Pravin
are the first ever recipients of this prestigious research award from
the MSU Environmental Management doctoral program. Previously, two MS
and three PhD students working under Dr. Sarkar received this grant at
the University of Texas at San Antonio. You are currently viewing: Environmental Management PhD Features
