Ben Witherell, a doctoral candidate in the Environmental Management Ph.D. program, was recently awarded a 2009 Summer Synthesis Scholars fellowship.  The Summer Synthesis Institute is part of the Northeast Consortium for Hydrologic Synthesis and represents a broad cross-section of faculty, post-doctoral fellows and students in hydrologic sciences and related water policy and management arenas.  The current NSF-funded project of the Consortium is to address “’The 500-Year Challenge’ – to understand the role of humans in shaping the character of hydrologic systems across the Northeast Corridor from the year 1600 to 2100.”

Ben’s doctoral research is focused on evaluating feedback mechanisms between human activity and natural hydrologic environments in New Jersey with the aid of system dynamics modeling and geographic information science (GIS) tools.  For more information about the Northeast Consortium for Hydrologic Synthesis, visit: http://hydrosynthesis.ccny.cuny.edu/Home.html.
