Passaic River Institute
The mission of the Passaic River Institute is to further environmental research and education and to seek solutions for environmental problems within the Passaic River basin of Northern New Jersey. PRI research projects include the study of contaminant biological uptake, regional toxicity, pollutant fate, transport and distribution, and ecosystem degradation and restoration.

Remote Sensing Lab
The Remote Sensing Laboratory is located in the Department of Earth and Environmental Studies (EAES). Research activities in the lab are sponsored by NASA and the European Space Agency. Current projects to use data from NASA's Earth Observing System satellite instruments to map carbon pools in arid environments of the southwestern US; and to exploit data from the Compact High Resolution Imaging Spectrometer flown on the European Space Agency's PROBA satellite). A current research focus is the use of data from the unique NASA/JPL Multiangle Imaging Spectro-Radiometer (MISR), including cutting-edge work on mapping forest canopy height as well as crown cover; and mapping woody plant cover and community type in desert grasslands. Users of the Lab include faculty, post-doctoral research associates, and doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate students (students taking GEOS/ENVR 455 Fundamentals of Remote Sensing; ENVR 655 Advanced Environmental Remote Sensing; EUGS 470 Geographic Information Systems; and EUGS 680 Spatial Analysis; a new graduate Certificate Program in Geographic Information Science will also be offered from Fall 2007). Equipment comprises Sun and Mac Unix workstations linked via high speed networking to CSAM servers, as well as PCs, plotters, and a high resolution drum scanner. Software includes ERDAS Imagine, Arc/INFO, ENVI, IDL, ArcGIS, and proprietary codes.

Center for Environmental Management and Anaylsis
The Center for Environmental Management & Analysis (CEMA) at Montclair State University is located in the College of Science and Mathematics and the Dept. of Earth & Environmental Studies but provides university-wide leadership and coordination for energy and environmentally-related research and service activities. CEMA focuses its resources to address energy, air and water quality issues, solid and hazardous waste, sediment and land contamination, and coastal resource management. It has a base of researchers drawn from a wide range of academic departments at the university that specialize in: environmental business issues; environmental sustainability; waste management solutions and analysis; alternative energy systems (wind, solar, geothermal, hydro); geo-chemical and soils analysis; hydrologic modeling; geoscience and underground penetrating radar; and GIS mapping and remote sensing.
