MATHEMATICS EDUCATION

Middle Grades Math Programs (MGM-STEP Grants)

What:

The University has been awarded a NJ State High-Tech Workforce Excellence grant to work for 3 years with school districts to improve grades 5-8 mathematics and science instruction.

How:

  • a new master's degree in teaching middle grades mathematics
  • a new certificate program in teaching middle grades mathematics that counts toward the master's degree
  • free mini-courses for teachers of grades 5-8 math and science
  • grant-funded summer science institutes for teachers of grades 5-8
  • in-class follow-up for participating teachers
  • online assistance to participating teachers: email to faculty, teaching plans and resources on a website, and distance-learning opportunities
  • program to recruit and retain new teachers for urban districts through mentoring and extensive professional development in science & math
     
  • Districts that are members of the New Jersey Network for Educational Renewal will have priority for limited resources.

Participation is currently limited to cohorts of recruited teachers, but application for enrollment will likely be open for programs and courses starting Fall 2004.
